Weapons Laws and Regulations

Important Notice

At Slingshots Australia, we are committed to ensuring our customers understand the legal requirements for purchasing, possessing, and using slingshots in Australia. The information provided on this page is intended as a general guideline only and is current as of May 2025. Weapons laws and regulations vary across Australian states and territories and are subject to change. It is the Buyer’s responsibility to verify and comply with the most up-to-date local laws in their state or territory before purchasing or using our products. Slingshots Australia does not accept liability for any non-compliance with applicable laws.

For the most accurate and current information, we strongly recommend contacting your local police service or legal authority, or reviewing the relevant legislation directly.

Our Sales Policy

Slingshot Y-frames (the forked frame component of a slingshot) are legal to purchase and possess without permits in Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and Tasmania, subject to certain conditions. To comply with Australian weapons laws, Slingshots Australia restricts the sale and shipment of slingshot Y-frames to Queensland (QLD), ACT, and Tasmania only.

No slingshot Y-frames will be shipped to New South Wales (NSW), Victoria (VIC), South Australia (SA), Western Australia (WA), or the Northern Territory (NT), where they are classified as prohibited weapons or restricted. Orders to these states containing a slingshot Y-frame in the cart will be blocked at checkout, and any orders that bypass this restriction will be cancelled.

Unrestricted items, such as bands, targets, clay ammo, and all other accessories can be shipped nationwide, including to NSW, VIC, SA, WA, and the NT. Customers in these restricted states are welcome to purchase these items without any limitations.

General Guidelines on Slingshot Laws by State and Territory

Below is a summary of the legal status of slingshots in each Australian state and territory, based on publicly available information.

Laws, rules and regulations are subject to change at any time and whilst we aim to keep this page updated with current information, you must do your own due diligence to know the current laws for you and your state. The below is provided for guidance only, and you must consult the relevant legislation or authorities for confirmation.

Queensland

  • Legislation: Weapons Act 1990 (QLD)

  • Status: Slingshots without arm braces are legal to purchase, possess, and sell without a weapons license. Slingshots designed as weapons (e.g., with arm braces or trigger mechanisms) may be classified as Category M weapons, requiring a license.

  • Our Policy: Slingshots Australia sells slingshots without arm braces, which are legal in Queensland. Buyers must ensure their use complies with local laws and does not involve prohibited activities.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

  • Legislation: Prohibited Weapons Act 1996 (ACT)

  • Status: Slingshots are generally permitted for possession and use, provided they are not used in a manner that violates public safety or other laws. Certain types of slingshots may be restricted if deemed dangerous weapons.

  • Our Policy: We ship to ACT, but Buyers must confirm compliance with local regulations.

Tasmania

  • Legislation: Police Offences Act 1935 (TAS)

  • Status: Slingshots are legal to possess and use, subject to restrictions on misuse or use in a threatening manner. No specific permit is required for standard slingshots.

New South Wales (NSW)

  • Legislation: Weapons Prohibition Act 1998 (NSW)

  • Status: Slingshots are classified as prohibited weapons under Schedule 1, Item 2(6). Possession, use, or purchase requires a Prohibited Weapon General Permit issued by the NSW Police. Unauthorized possession or sale can result in penalties up to 14 years imprisonment.

  • Our Policy: We do not ship to NSW due to these restrictions.

Victoria

  • Legislation: Control of Weapons Act 1990 (VIC)

  • Status: Slingshots are prohibited weapons, requiring a Governor in Council Exemption Order or Chief Commissioner Approval for possession or use. Penalties for unauthorized possession include fines up to $28,000 or 2 years imprisonment.
